“Crunchy red fruit, epitomized”

Crunchy Red Fruit. Not as a company name. As a wine descriptor. If you’re still listening and following along, you’re probably realizing that I love wines with this approachable, easy-drinking quality. Red wines that are pale, refreshing, and friendly. Wines you can put in the fridge for an hour or two.

Les Athlètes du Vin is a group of like-minded friends and winemakers from the Loire Valley in France. They all have their own projects and wineries, but every year band together to create tasty, approachable cuvées made from shared fruit. This Pineau d’Aunis is a perfect example of their handiwork. A rare grape that sometimes gets lost in blends, or made into cheap rosé, but one that becomes an absolutely delicious wine when treated with respect.

On the nose, it’s a basket of fresh fruit. Red apple skin, cherries, and tiny strawberries. Pink peppercorn, topsoil and fresh violets round it out. Crunchy red fruit, epitomized. Oops I said it again. On the palate, let this wine take over your senses. Fresh red fruit and peppery notes and all the silky texture you could hope for. This is where that hour in the fridge really works wonders. It’s effortless to drink this.

suggested pairings.

Charcuterie Board

No I don’t have a recipe for you. But this wine is a no-brainer when it comes to pairing with a selection of charcuterie/salumi and cheese. A couple suggestions for meats: Finocchiona, Salame piccante, Prosciutto di Parma, and spanish chorizo. Cheese? Try Vacherousse d’Argental, Bethmale, or some mild Manchego.

Red Snapper Puttanesca

Yes, I said it. Red Wine and Fish. Besides being the title of a really fantastic, out-of-print food and wine pairing book from the 90s, it’s actually a thing you can do. Not all red wines are big, oaky bruisers. Some of them, like this Pineau d’Aunis, are fresh, light, and perfect for pairing with fish. With a heavier fish and lighter wine, the pairings start to make sense. Not so with heavy wines and light fish. Try this Red Snapper Puttanesca and some lightly chilled Pineau d’Aunis and you’ll be happy.

“Intentions (feat. Quavo)” -Justin Bieber

Sorry if you’re not down with the Biebs. From a production, songcraft, and sonic dimension standpoint, the new album rocks. That’s all I gotta say. “Intentions” is a laid-back, getting ready for dinner while you snack, low-pressure track. Just like this wine.
