“I can’t think of anything better with roast chicken than a bottle of slightly chilled Beaujolais like this.”
God how I adore Beaujolais. I don’t think there’s a region anywhere that I get this much sheer enjoyment out of. Almost every time I try a new wine from these rolling, picturesque hills south of Burgundy, I crack a big smile. How can it be this fruity and accessible and filled with delicious stony notes all at the same time?
Anne-Sophie Dubois, (still in her 30s!) is at the helm of her eponymous winery. She’s a firm believer in organic viticulture and low-intervention winemaking, and has put in amazing work. Her wines are beautiful expressions of terroir, making the Gamay grape shine with remarkable texture and finesse.
This wine comes from the village of Fleurie, and is a slightly different style than Anne-Sophie usually makes–this is cheerful and lifted, made by utilizing whole cluster fermentation. Whole cluster, carbonic fermentation gives off more candied, juicy notes, and this wine gives them out in spades.
Leading with cranberry, raspberry and pomegranate, this wine The texture is admirably silky and lithe, and finishes clean and dry. I can’t think of anything better with roast chicken than a bottle of slightly chilled Beaujolais like this.
Music: “One Night” by Broken Bells
I wanted a current song with a vintage vibe to match this one, as it fits the mood of the wine.
